Elvin is a system for content-based notification routing.

The Elvin protocol specifications describe all aspects of the protocol suite.

Applications that use Elvin may choose to register their notification formats to promote interoperability.

In addition, several of the Elvin protocols require fields whose values are defined externally to the protocol specification itself, to allow for extension.

Both of these roles are catered for by a registry of allocated values and a public specification of their meaning.
